Year 6 at a prep school
11+ or SATs — which is it?
Families at prep schools often ask which Year 6 assessment matters. Here is the short version.
The 11+
A selective entrance exam for grammar and independent senior schools. It tests ability and reasoning beyond the curriculum, and is usually sat between September and January of Year 6. This is the route most prep school families are preparing for.
SATs
The national curriculum assessments sat in May of Year 6, measuring attainment against age-related expectations in arithmetic and reasoning. Statutory in state schools; some prep schools still sit them alongside 11+ preparation.
